  • INTRODUCTION:

    COLORADO: The minimum requirements for the State of Colorado vary from county to county, with some requiring as little as Hunter Education and others NRA Basic Pistol. Check with your local Sheriff's Office for minimum requirements.

    WYOMING: In addition to the Colorado section above, Wyoming is a "Permit-Less Carry" State, which means, if you a legal resident of Wyoming, at least 21 years of age, and otherwise meet the requirements to obtain a Concealed Weapons Permit/License, then you may carry concealed ONLY IN WYOMING. If you plan to travel to another state however, you must a Concealed Weapons Permit/License to continue to carry in the state you are visiting, assuming Reciprocity exists. Wyoming DCI

    GENERAL NOTES:
    1. A piece of paper with the minimum requirements having been satisfied does NOT mean you are adequately prepared for a violent criminal encounter. I believe very strongly in personal safety and quality education, training and experience, which is why I teach these courses.
    2. The combination of NRA Basic Pistol and Defensive Handgun classes ranging from 30-36 hours is an excellent start to what I think makes up proper education and training, and everything you will learn in these classes is incredibly important should you have to defend your life from violent criminal attack. This far exceeds all requirements that Colorado has set forth, but truly represents the minimum level of training I believe is necessary for your personal benefit and protection.
    3. You never know when you will need to be able to defend yourself, and even if you have never been in a situation where you have been in fear of your life or that of someone close to you, that does not mean you never will.
    4. Do your best to avoid trouble, but you never know when trouble will find you. I take a practical approach in teaching my courses and will always do things hands-on, doing things safely both in the classroom and during instruction in “the field.”
    5. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE TO ANYONE AT ANY TIME FOR ANY REASON. We are in the business of training people for basic firearms knowledge and experience, concealed carry, law enforcement officers, military and others. We commonly do background checks to include court record searches on our students to verify lack of criminal record. Thank you for your understanding.
    6. Every single one of our classes can be broken up into 4 hour blocks of instruction. Course fee/s will be pro-rated according to length of the instruction block. This is for your convenience and makes it possible to have clases in the evenings after work if you like, and/or not taking up an entire weekend day or week day. We are pleased to offer this new as of 2017 thanks to requests from students and potential students!
    7. Always keep improving.

    COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

    IMPORTANT NOTE: NRA Basic Pistol and Defensive Handgun are intended to be a 3-day instructional period, commonly referred to as my "Concealed Carry Course". The courses can be split into separate dates per course. The purpose is for our students to be well-educated in a concise and accurate manner. Graduating from my class will benefit you by TRULY preparing you for carrying concealed, (like in the case of Wyomming with Permitless Carry), and to obtain your Concealed Carry permit, but also for the practicalities of carrying a concealed weapon as part of your daily life.

    GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Please memorize these 3 NRA Firearm Safety Rules before any NRA courses; you will be tested both before handling any firearm, and before course completion:

    1. Always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction.
    2. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
    3. Always keep your gun unloaded until ready to use.
    4. Important Note: For any NRA Class, NRA Rules and Regulations require our instructors and students to have no live ammunition allowed in the classroom.

    It is to our mutual benefit that you memorize these 4 (non-NRA) Firearm Safety Rules before attending any of my self produced (non-NRA) courses; you will be tested both before handling any firearm, will exercise them in class and throughout our Range Time, and before course completion:

    1. Always know the condition of your weapon.
    2. Always know the direction of your muzzle.
    3. Keep your finger indexed along the frame of your weapon until your sights are on target and you’re prepared to shoot.
    4. Always be sure of your target and what’s beyond.

    This is not an NRA course. This is designed to be a foundational course, which I have found benefits you in a PROPER introduction to self defense. This course is a prerequisite to go forward to take additional instruction (continued education) from us in the hourly format. Students may be referred to us by other instuctors we know, we may assess and evaluate skill levels to go on to our advanced classes. We also refer students to other instructors to do additional training through our training group/network. We know people within the shooting and training community whom we have mutual trust and experience with to give you the best training and value. This class is what has been developed from experience and addresses the vast majority of potential issues that involve carrying a gun for self defense, and puts you far ahead of the majority of other people carrying concealed weapons in society. Defensive Handgun is taught by an experienced instructor who will teach you:

    • The legal, moral and ethical decisions of carrying a weapon to defend yourself;
    • COLORADO: Colorado Revised Statutes (C.R.S.) pertinent to defending yourself, your family and/or a third party or WYOMING: Wyoming Code;
    • The politics of gun ownership, gun control and your Second Amendment rights; education in how to keep your Constitutional rights;
    • How to proceed after a situation during which you have had to use force to defend yourself, and combat mindset;
    • Force-related scenarios and practical decision-making based on the laws of Colorado and/or Wyoming (no one can possibly teach every possible scenario, but I can guide you in evaluating sample scenarios);
    • The importance of having a self-defense insurance policy in place should you have to use your weapon(s) to defend yourself, your family, or a third party;
    • Guidance in selecting the proper caliber, ammunition, holster, and carry method of your choice;
    • Presentation and shooting from the holster, using no concealment, then progressing to using concealment, maintaining strict safety and basic and advanced shooting skills.
    • Weapon malfunctions and reloads, "running the gun".
    • Live fire exercises and Colorado P.O.S.T. Qualification course of fire or FBI Course of Fire or a Custom Course of Fire for final live fire evaluation
    • I will do my best to ensure that you are equipped to make the correct decisions in how to use your skills and training to avoid being charged criminally and/or sued civilly;
    • I stress the importance of continuing education through books, instruction through other instructors, and practical shooting events whether for competition or for recreation.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

    • Question: Why choose MacGregor Specialties, LLC? And why is 3 days of CCW training so much more than other classes available for $75 for 4 hours?
    • Answer: We believe in quality, not quantity. See our Wordpress Article written here.
    • Question: What Holster do you recommend?
    • Answer: I recommend AlienGear and Urban Carry Holsters and I have for several years to several students, particularly with respect to AlienGear. For those of you who want a more traditional and leather approach, see Urban Carry Holsters in the Sidebar, and/or here:
    • Question: If I already have my concealed carry permit, am I trained and qualified to carry and why should I take your class/es?
    • Answer: See our Wordpress Article written here from the previous FAQ that also applies to this one. Are you qualified? Yes! You have a Constitutional Right to bear arms! Bear in mind that you get what you pay for. How much value do you place on your life, the lives of your family, and/or your freedom? In the end, that is ultimately what is on the line. As we get talking to people, many people tell us they already have their concealed carry permits like it's some sort of destination. Black Belt martial artists understand that obtaining a Black Belt is just the beginning, that you have now theoretically mastered the basics. Our instructors never stop training, we are always students, shooting is a diminishing skill. You own every round you send downrange. Can you testify in court that you have taken every possible opportunity to train? Do you know everything there is to know? Our classes far exceed minimum requirements, which is to your benefit, including a lot of hands-on, practical training, and instruction. We highly recommend taking every training opportunity you are presented with so you can evaluate what works for you.Always keep improving.
    • Question: What is the best value for my money?
    • Answer: We get this question all the time. We have created a comprehensive class which encompasses the training and education that delivers well-rounded knowledge of these topics.
    • Question: Where are your classes held?
    • Answer: We give you options: 1. The comfort of your own home, (with more than one student we will make arrangements to include shooting venue); 2. Indoor classroom, (like a shooting range); 3. At my home (we'll shoot nearby).
    • Question: How many students are in your classes?
    • Answer: 1. We prefer small classes a 1:1 instructor student ratio or 1:2 instructor to student ratio at most; 2. Generally we have 1 to 4, and will max out at 10 for non-LE or non-military, depending upon available instructors especially for range safety concerns, if there are several students (military, LE, first responders) we will coordinate appropriately; 3. If you prefer the one-on-one instruction let us know; 4. There is always the option of additional hourly instruction which most students opt for anyway.
    • Question: If I don't have a firearm, should I buy one before class?
    • Answer: I would recommend not buying one just yet, and here's why: 1. How are you going to know which one to buy? 2. How are you going to know which firearm type, action, caliber, make, model, features, color, accessory options, holster options, etc. etc. etc. you are going to want or need? 3. What if you show up with a firearm that you didn't know how to properly operate, shoot, and found it to be uncomfortable, too large, too small, etc. 4. Considering you're training with me, I am going to help you answer these questions, and I can even help you buy what's appropriate for you and your situation. 5. I have gone with students to help them purchase guns at gun stores, going to shooting ranges, evaluating guns with them, and helping them figure out what particular firearm/s works for them.
    • Question: If I don't have a firearm, what will I use?
    • Answer: You will shoot a Ruger Mk1 or optionally a Glock 23 converted to .22LR for NRA Basic Pistol and then you will shoot at your choice Sig Sauer P225 (9mm) or a Glock 23 (chambered in either .40cal or 9mm), or a Ruger SP101 (in either .357 magnum or .38 special) for the Defensive Carry class.
    • Question: If I do have a firearm, should I bring it?
    • Answer: Absolutely! There is no better way to learn how to shoot, than to use your own, get familiar with your own, and get good with the one/s you already have. I teach you from the ground up, starting with the basics, especially if you need it. Also, if you're willing to lend yours with the rest of the class, we can get the other students familiar with others as well, it increases the knowledge level of the entire class and promotes the shooting community with knowledge, sharing that knowledge, and gets everyone involved with one another.
    • Question: Are you claiming to be the one stop shop I should ever come take a class with? And/or, are you claiming to be above any other instructor?
    • Answer: No. Never stop training, our instructors are constantly seeking to improve, and we will take, evaluate, implement and integrate any other skills and training we see fit that would be of value to our students. We only claim that we are quality instructors who have over 20,000 hours of training and development on this topic. Our goal is to properly equip students to preserve life and liberty.
    • Question: Do your classes really prepare me for shooting competitions and continued education and training through other instructors and other schools?
    • Answer: Yes, absolutely. We highly recommend training with other instructors, it validates our training, other high end schools such as Front Sight Training Institute have several quality programs, and our students have said they were properly prepared as a result of taking NRA Basic Pistol AND Defensive Handgun through MacGregor Specialties, LLC.
    • Question: Why do you offer hourly instruction blocks?
    • Answer: We can tailor instruction per individual and for circumstances that otherwise a course curriculum may not be as flexible to allow. For example, some people need help with their draw/presentation, not so much their accuracy. Some people want to follow-up with advanced shooting skills, such as low-light or night shooting, or going through more scenarios, or a range of other advanced instruction we offer. Developing your shooting skills take a lot of quality practice, but also most importantly, quality initial instruction. Bad instruction, bad introduction/s to guns, shooting, and the firearm-owning community, bad habits can be difficult to train away from, but that is part of our job and we pride ourselves on quality instruction to overcome prior bad training.
    • Question: Who are the other instructors you vouch for around Colorado and/or Wyoming and the rest of the country?
    • Answer: Come to our classes, we spread good word by word of mouth. We know other great instructors and shooters out there, whom have integrity are good people, and most likely are in or have retired from the military and law enforcement communities. If we vouch for them, we have most likely shot with them, as well as trained alongside them. We are networked with other shooting schools and instructors, and sometimes teach with one another when asked and/or needed.
    • Question: Where do you conduct the field or range time?
    • Answer: We use an outdoor range. This is because indoor and even some outdoor ranges do not let you draw from concealment and move about the range due to their liability reasons (moving about the range means advancing while firing, retreating while firing, or otherwise "getting off the X"). Not being able to draw from concealment and move about the range would make our Defensive training classes impossible to conduct. There are almost no areas, ranges, and usable space to conduct this kind of training, so we are always open to new opportunities.
    • Question: What safety procedures are in place in case something terrible happens?
    • Answer: Barring acts of God out of our control, we are EMT-B trained and prepared as such. The most important priority on the range and in the classroom is safety, we teach it, we also live it, exercise it, and set good examples. However, if someone were to get shot during our instruction, we avoid these ugly scenarios by preaching, teaching, and practicing good gun safety procedures, using and setting the example of the same rules and procedures we teach you. You have to violate at least 2, not even one, fundamental firearm safety rule in order to shoot yourself or someone else negligently or otherwise without authorization.
    • Question: How is your business furthered?
    • Answer: We are a word-of-mouth business, we appreciate positive feedback and reviews and encourage you to share us with your friends and family!
    • Question: How young can a child be taught the Eddie Eagle class? And how much does it cost?
    • Answer: A child can generally be taught as young as 6 years old. This is also dependent upon parental guidance and of course approval whether the child has the critical thinking and decision-making prowess.
    • Question: Do you recommend husband and wife students, families of students, etc. showing up to take your classes together?
    • Answer: Absolutely, as long as all parties are willing students, remain students and don't try to teach the other unless given the approval to be a shooting coach, but never to take the place of the instructor.
    • Question: How do break and lunch times work?
    • Answer: We take breaks generally once per hour for about 10 minutes, lunch is when everyone has collectively decided it's time for lunch. If you choose to snack the whole time, common sense dictates that as long as you're not disruptive to the other students, feel free.
    • Question: What are your payment options?
    • Answer: Please bring a method of payment (check, cash, or credit card on-site - if paying by credit 2.75% will be added) unless you prepay through our convenient Paypal buttons (PayPal requires a 3% fee as well) - prepaid is preferred, which if you do, and contact me for details.
    • Question: Should I bring my children to class?
    • Answer: If your children aren't shooting, or paying students of the class, they should not attend, otherwise it could be a very disruptive training environment, there may be other students in addition to yourself. If we are teaching in your home then reasonable preparation should be made to keep distractions to an absolute minimum.
